Scrutiny Panel 3 - Update

Scrutiny Panel is where full-time GSU Officers are held accountable for the work they are doing and given advice on how to proceed with their campaigns based on the needs of members. The Panellists are composed of Jason, a student trustee, and four student leaders selected from academic representatives, society leaders and Liberation Chairs.

After each Panel, the Chair provides a report to members. Jason reports:

“The third Scrutiny Panel sitting of the academic year took place on Thursday 30th November 2023. The Panel were impressed by the progress made by some of the officers in accelerating their campaigns and delivering opportunities for students in only a few months. Two officers required extensions to their submissions and therefore it was highlighted that officers should protect time each week to ensure that documentation and evidence is prioritised and to the highest levels of quality. It was noted that some documents and evidence submitted did not meet the level of expectation required of the panel and affected officers were contacted directly and provided the option of additional support if they wish to pursue this. As we have progressed significantly through the year, an expectation of meaningful evaluation, reflection on outcomes and assessment of impact should be incorporated across all campaigns. The panel expects that evidence of output is translating into not just improvements but tangible change for members. We look forward to continuing supporting officers through their campaigns”.

After each sitting of the Panel, Officers are set a series of actions to be achieved either before or by the date of the next sitting, along with an overall rating. You can find the outcomes for each Officer below:

Anuj – Motivate

· The Panel feel your quality of work and output are excellent, but undermined by your quality of documentation.

· The Panel ask that you provide more evidence of your work, as the evidence does not reflect the progress noted in your verbal updates.

· The Panel ask that you consider evaluation, outcome and impact of your campaigns in future Panels. As you are now nearly halfway through your terms, the Panel expect to see evidence that output is translating into improvements and change for members.

· The Panel ask that you show in future Panels that you booked out half an hour per week to update Panel documents on a regular basis. This will help you keep track of actions closer to the time.

· The Panel request that you speak internally in GSU about whether you can have help with getting self-certification for extenuating circumstances.

· The Panel ask that you ensure that you re-organise your meeting with the Information and Library Services about removing hidden costs.

Aminul – Motivate

· The Panel were somewhat disappointed with the quality of evidence and documentation given, and in particular the fact that some parts were not updated properly and included old ‘next steps’. The Panel ask that you fully update your document between each Panel.

· The Panel ask that you consider evaluation, outcome and impact of your campaigns in future Panels. As you are now nearly halfway through your terms, the Panel expect to see evidence that output is translating into improvements and change for members.

· The Panel ask that you show in future Panels that you booked out half an hour per week to update Panel documents on a regular basis. This will help you keep track of actions closer to the time.

· The Panel ask that you consider whether you need any new GSU initiatives in January to help with loneliness at Greenwich.

· The Panel ask that you start work on the Talent Show as soon as possible – considering whether you need Trustee Board sign off to start work or can do some preliminary work yourself.

· The Panel ask that when hosting events and festivals, you consider whether there is any data you can collect to help you improve members’ experiences.

Laziz – Approve

· The Panel were impressed on your progress with the implementation of Freelance Hub.

· The Panel ask that you consider evaluation, outcome and impact of your campaigns in future Panels. As you are now nearly halfway through your terms, the Panel expect to see evidence that output is translating into improvements and change for members.

· The Panel ask that you show in future Panels that you booked out half an hour per week to update Panel documents on a regular basis. This will help you keep track of actions closer to the time.

· The Panel were somewhat disappointed that you have not managed to consult students of a variety of faiths in your work. They ask that you consider different ways of reaching these students, such as asking to join them for committee meetings or going to society events where appropriate.

· The Panel ask that you gather feedback on Disabled Students’ Coffee Mornings to understand how to improve them in future.

Sodiq – Approve

· The Panel were impressed with your overall progress, and felt you are demonstrating a good quality and quantity of completed work at this point in the year.

· The Panel ask that you consider evaluation, outcome and impact of your campaigns in future Panels. As you are now nearly halfway through your terms, the Panel expect to see evidence that output is translating into improvements and change for members.

· The Panel ask that you show in future Panels that you booked out half an hour per week to update Panel documents on a regular basis. This will help you keep track of actions closer to the time.

· Please send the Panel documentation from the food diversity research last academic year before the next sitting.

· The Panel ask whether you might consider whether there is any more data you need from students on this.

· The Panel ask that in future, you include attendance numbers when reporting on your events.

· The Panel ask that you consider using data from timetables and other sources when doing drop-ins to reach the most members possible.
