I am so very pleased to nominate Victoria Naumuleme for recognition as part of SU50. In a collaboration which adopts a unique methodology, which cross fertilises Sociology (auto/biography) and Law, Victoria and other students are working to make an important and notable contribution to the field of Decolonial Law.

This is a new and emerging area, which has so far been led by longstanding legal academics. However, Victoria Namuleme is now contributing to this area, by sharing her experiences – specifically how her intersectional identity shapes her journey as a Law student. This is a very powerful approach, for many reasons.

Firstly, her work enables understanding of the experiences of Law students from similar intersectional backgrounds, with reference to important theorists like Kimberle Crenshaw. More specifically she focuses on how this will shape access into the legal career, either here or in her country of origin. It will also have international reach, and perhaps provide guidance for those who are wanting to follow in her footsteps.

Secondly, the work in this area is largely theoretical, therefore, this research provides a much needed approach which centres lived experience, thus making a notable contribution to this field.

Victoria’s work will be a part of powerful collective, which will inform and arguably reshape approaches to teaching Law and other related subjects. I wish her the very best – go Victoria!
