University of Greenwich and Greenwich Students' Union logos on pride flag colours

Here is a joint statement from the University of Greenwich and the Greenwich Students' Union with endorsement from the STAART team, in response to the hate speech that the University of Greenwich pride logo received over the weekend on social media.

University of Greenwich:

We were saddened to see the hate speech that our Pride logo received, which we have removed and reported. We do not tolerate any form of discrimination here at Greenwich and we will continue to monitor the comments on this thread and others. We stand with our wonderful LGBTQ+ staff and students. If you have been affected by any comments you have seen, we have wellbeing support on hand: gre.ac.uk/wellbeing. We’re PROUD to be GRE.

Greenwich Students' Union:

As members of the University of Greenwich community, we all agree to a core set of values in our Student Charter.

We all undertake to treat our fellow students and staff with courtesy and respect. We all commit to creating an open and inclusive environment where everyone can feel welcome and can succeed. We all must ensure the safety and well-being of ourselves and others.

The comments and negative reactions under the University's recent post of solidarity with the LGTBQ+ community fall well outside our values and is wholly unacceptable.

The Student's Union and the University will not tolerate intolerance from any of our members and we will protect our students from any unlawful discrimination under the University's Bullying & Harassment Policy and Procedures. Any breach of this policy may lead to disciplinary proceedings against students.

If you believe that you have been discriminated against in any way or that you are being harassed, don't suffer in silence. Speak to your Personal Tutor or a Students’ Union Adviser suadvice@gre.ac.uk.
